Mitochondria: a key organelle to explain the different in longevity between sexes

Biography

José Viña studied Medicine at the University of Valencia, Spain, where he earned his PhD after conducting research with Hans Krebs in Oxford, United Kingdom. Dr. Viña is Emeritus Professor of Physiology at the University of Valencia and leads a highly successful research group, FRESHAGE, which investigates various aspects of aging, including healthy aging, exercise, and Alzheimer’s disease. He currently holds the Chair of Geroscience at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM). His h-index is 90. He has authored an extensive body of work, with more than 450 publications in prestigious international journals, focusing on glutathione, mitochondria, oxidative stress, free radicals, nutrition, and exercise. Professor Viña has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Albert Struyvenberg Medal awarded by the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI) in 2017, the “Onda Cero” Scientific Award in 2018, and the Research Career Award from the University of Valencia Council in 2019. In 2023, he received the prestigious Lester Packer Award from the International Society for Free Radical Research. In 2025, he was awarded the Healthcare Excellence Prize, sponsored by 8 Mediterráneo, for his promotion of healthy lifestyle habits. Dr. Viña delivered a lecture at the Presidential Address of the Gerontological Society of America in 2018 and spoke at the Nobel Prize Foundation session on aging in 2019. He is an editor of Free Radical Biology and Medicine and a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community. In addition, he has been awarded two honorary doctorates, from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the University of Rennes (France). Dr. Viña served as President of the International Society for Free Radical Research (SFRR-I) from 2020 to 2021. Dr. Viña’s work has been widely recognized by his peers. His publications, including book chapters, have been cited more than 27,500 times, resulting in an h-index of 90 (Web of Science data). He authored the most cited article in Biochemical Journal in 1978, in Free Radical Biology and Medicine in 2003, and in Journal of Gerontology in 2013. He was the most cited author in Free Radical Research in 2008 and the second most cited author in IUBMB Life in 2000, Biochemical Journal in 1980, and Free Radical Biology and Medicine in 2019 (data from Exaly).

Hormonal Decline, Mitochondrial Dysfunction, and Menopausal Disease Risk

Biography

Vilma is an Assistant Researcher at the University of Coimbra and a member of the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal). Her research focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction as a key mechanism underlying ageing and age-related diseases, integrating cell biology, metabolism and toxicology approaches. She obtained her PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Coimbra in collaboration with the University of Minnesota (USA) and developed an international research trajectory studying mitochondrial mechanisms in metabolic stress, drug-induced toxicity and disease. Her current work investigates how mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondria-lysosome crosstalk contribute to skeletal ageing and osteoporosis, with particular interest in mechanisms relevant to women’s health. Her research aims to identify mitochondrial pathways that may support healthier ageing.
