Mitochondrial and metabolic hepatic complications of obesity
11:00 AM - 11:30 AMBiography
John Griffith Jones is a Principal Investigator with Aggregation at the Center of Neurosciences at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. His research focuses on the use of stable isotopes to study metabolic fluxes in different organisms, ranging from yeast to humans. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Arlington in 1991 and then moved to the Lab of Craig Malloy and Dean Sherry at the Department of Radiology at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where he developed stable isotope tracer methods for studying hepatic sugar and fat metabolism. After moving to Coimbra, Portugal in 2000, he applied this approach to study sugar and fat metabolism in subjects with diabetes and liver disease as well as pre-clinical rodent models. Outside of research, he has longstanding passions for fly-fishing, golf and brewing beer.
Mariusz Wieckowski
Head of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology and Metabolism
Nencki
Autophagy in MASLD: Friend or Foe?
11:30 AM - 12:00 PMBiography
Professor Mariusz R. Wieckowski is the head of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology and Metabolism at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. Prof. Wieckowski is leading expert in mitochondrial field, mitochondrial
bioenergetics, and oxidative stress in the context of rare and civilization disorders. His recent research focuses on different aspects of intracellular oxidative stress and metabolic alterations in various pathological situations. Recently, within the frame of Horizon 2020 project, he is also working on the role of metabolic alterations in obesity development and progression. From 2022 he is a councilor of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI). He closely collaborates with three patient organizations gathering patients with rare and ultra-rare diseases such as: NBIA POLAND FOUNDATION; PACS2 RESEARCH FOUNDATION) and MEK2 RESEARCH FOUNDATION.
