12:00 - 12:15

Biography

Inês Alencastre is a Researcher at RISE‑Health|Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP), Coordinator of the Nephrology and Cardiovascular Risk Laboratory, and Invited Professor at FMUP. She holds a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from UP. Throughout her career, she has investigated fundamental biochemical pathways across diverse pathologies, including cancer (SUGEN Inc., USA), neurodegenerative diseases (IBMC, Portugal), organelle biogenesis disorders (IBMC, Portugal) and bone regeneration (i3S, Portugal) and, more recently, kidney diseases (RISE‑Health|FMUP), which now constitute the central and most intellectually compelling drive of her research. Presently, her research focuses in the investigation of the environment-specific cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD) as a mean to discover biomarkers and therapeutic targets for CKD and associated comorbidities, in particular, cardiovascular disease and renal osteodystrophy. She is deeply committed to translating mechanistic discoveries into clinically meaningful advances that may improve outcomes for CKD patients.
