Mitochondrial and cellular respirometry – a historical timeline
2:30 PM - 3:00 PMBiography
Paulo J. Oliveira is Principal Investigator with Agregação at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra (UC), where he leads the “Mitochondria, Metabolism and Disease” group and the MitoXT laboratory. He obtained his PhD in Cellular Biology (2003) at UC, followed by ~4 years post-doc at the University of Minnesota Medical School (USA). His research focuses on mitochondrial metabolism, particularly its alterations during aging and lifestyle‑related diseases, and on therapeutic strategies to preserve mitochondrial function.. He has authored more than 350 peer‑reviewed publications. Paulo has played a central role in organizing major scientific meetings and served as President of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (2019–2022). He is Vice‑President of CNC, coordinator of the Excelscior and PAS GRAS European projects, and co‑founder of MitoTAG, holding several patents related to mitochondrial‑targeted antioxidants.

Mitochondrial respiration supports cancer growth independent of OXPHOS
3:30 PM - 4:00 PMBiography
Dr. Christos Chinopoulos is an Associate Professor at Semmelweis University, Department of Medical Biochemistry, Budapest. He earned his M.D. in 1998, Ph.D. in Neurochemistry in 2002, and D.Sc. in Medical Sciences in 2023 from Semmelweis University. Following postdoctoral training and a research fellowship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, he established an internationally recognized research program in mitochondrial bioenergetics. His current work focuses on cancer metabolism.
Dr. Chinopoulos has led multiple nationally and internationally funded projects, and has contributed to the development of quantitative proteomic platforms for mitochondrial research. He serves in senior editorial roles, including Senior and Commissioning Editor of the Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, and has received numerous awards recognizing excellence in research, teaching, and scientific leadership.
