Advancing neuroimaging with artificial intelligence
14:30 - 15:00Biography
Patrícia Figueiredo is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, and Principal Investigator of the Biomedical Engineering Lab at the Institute for Systems and Robotics – Lisboa. She holds a DPhil degree in Neuroimaging from the University of Oxford and was conferred Habilitation in Biomedical Engineering by Técnico, where she is currently the Vice-President of the Department of Bioengineering. She develops neuroimaging methods to study brain function noninvasively, with applications in both basic and clinical neuroscience. Her work has been distinguished by the Prize for Women in Science by L’Oréal Portugal and the António Xavier Prize for the best Portuguese PhD Thesis in NMR, EPR or MRI, as advisor. She was elected President of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) in 2023, Chair of the Brain Function Study Group of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) in 2024, and Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 2025.

Beyond P Values and Black Boxes: Critical Thinking in the Age of Big Data
15:00 - 15:30Biography
Nuno Morais is an Associate Professor at NOVA Medical School, where he leads the Disease Transcriptomics Lab at the Comprehensive Health Research Center. He holds a degree in Physics Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico) and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Lisbon School of Medicine, 2007), during which he investigated RNA splicing complexity with internships at the University of Cambridge and the EMBL. Following postdoctoral research at the Universities of Cambridge and Toronto (the latter supported by Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Marie Curie fellowships), he received an EMBO Installation Grant to establish his lab at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (now GIMM) in Lisbon (2015). His work, recently distinguished with the University of Lisbon / Caixa Geral de Depósitos 2024 Scientific Award in Biomedical Sciences, focuses on the computational analysis of high-throughput genomic data and the development of bioinformatics tools for non-computational scientists. He currently coordinates the Horizon Europe Twinning project BIOMICS, aimed at fostering excellence in Biomedical Data Science.
