Impact of metabolic status on bioenergetics in children and adults with obesity

11:00 - 11:30

Biography

Dr. Carvalho has been studying the underlying mechanisms related to insulin resistance and diabetes and related complications, for over 20 years. She has discovered that low insulin receptor substrate-1 protein levels in adipose tissue are predictors of pre-diabetes. More recently, she has expanded her research out into the community with the aim of implementing health literacy tools to prevent diabetes across the lifespan. She has received funding to evaluate the prevalence of diabetes, obesity and hypertension in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. She has assessed the phenotype and function of adipose tissue recruited immune cells and related the results with metabolic phenotypes. She has published over 110 scientific papers, trained over 20 post-doctoral fellows, over 16 PhD students and over 20 master students. She has been funded by national and international foundations, including, H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016, NIH, Diabetes UK, EFSD, INFARMED, HORIZON-HEALTH-2022-STAYHLTH-01: PAS GRAS and the FCT. orcid.org/0000-0001-6264-3632.
